December Song of the Month: Christmas Is My Favorite Time of Year

Christmas is my favorite time of year
Snow is falling
Friends are calling
Sharing gifts of holiday cheer

It’s the time of year when friends and family
Gather all together around the Christmas tree
Sharing laughter and stories, playing games so happily
Milk and cookies for Santa, it’s a Merry Christmas Eve

Christmas comes into our lives
Bringing joy that makes us smile

Christmas is my favorite time of year
Snow is falling
Friends are calling
Sharing gifts of holiday cheer

Christmas lights shine brightly adding to the fun
There’s a star on the tree on the mantle socks are hung
Gather at the piano where Christmas songs are sung
Celebrating the season of magic that’s begun

Christmas comes into our lives
Bringing joy that makes us smile

Christmas is my favorite time of year
Snow is falling
Friends are calling
Sharing gifts of holiday cheer

Ding dong ding dong
There’s magic all about
Ding dong ding dong
Christmas bells ring out.

Christmas is my favorite time of year
Snow is falling
Friends are calling

Sharing gifts of holiday cheer.

Merry Christmas!

The song is available to purchase for .99 at www.cdbaby.com/pbndeb4.

PBnDeb's Song of the Month for November 2013

PLAY

Come kitty cat and play with me
We’ll scratch on the couch and climb a tree
We’ll catch a mouse and swat some bees
When you come play with me.

Hey little dog come play with me
We’ll dig a hole that’s three feet deep
We’ll chase our tails and beg for treats
When you come play with me.

As you can tell from the lyrics, this song is a delightfully 'play'ful tune and one of the first songs PBnDeb collaborated on with another artist.  Lori Gunnell is a very talented writer.  Her lyrics are inviting and clever.  She works at Russ Reid Company, instructs a great Yoga Tune Up® class and is married to Philip.  Thank you Lori for sharing your creativity with us!

Go ahead.  Listen to it.  I dare you NOT to sing this song after hearing it once.

Come everyone and play with me
We’ll dance and have a fun party
We’ll scratch and dig and hop and sing

When you come play with me

Pathway to Talking: A Fish Goes Swish, Swish, Swish

I've recently been exploring the educational value of PBnDeb's music.  And as I read children and development articles, I am discovering many of our songs have unplanned benefits.  I just learned that one PBnDeb song "A Fish Goes Swish, Swish, Swish (with its tail)" is a pathway to speech.  Who knew!

Of course, I wasn't considering that when I wrote it.  I don't start writing by sitting down and thinking, "Okay, Deb, how can you write a song that is educationally valuable?"  How a song begins for me is a pattern of words, sometimes gibberish, but usually with some meaning, begins in my head.  And then I hear the melody.  I repeat the words over and over even using jargon words until the melody is set and then I start working on the lyrics.

"A Fish Goes Swish, Swish, Swish was written in 2009.  This was the year I was adopted by my dog, Spenser.  I've had cats for over 20 years. And then this dirty muppet face came up to me as I was pulling in my garbage cans.

I know this beautiful creature on the street and no one looking for him!  I wrote a story about it entitled, "Proud Enough To Bark." Spenser wasn't a bark-y dog.  In fact, he didn't bark at all.

One day as I was trying to teach Spenser to 'speak',  I started singing to him, "A doggies says:  Bow wow wow." And I would bark like a dog.  Next thing I knew a song was born and I ran for my phone and recorded it so I wouldn't lose it!

Since children don't come out of the womb knowing what a dog, frog or monkey look like much less sound like, I thought making a simple song about many different animals and the sounds they make with a chorus about an animal that doesn't make a sound would be fun!

Developmentally making animal sounds and identifying the animal are all great speech development tools.  Children need to learn sounds.  This is a simple and fun way to do it!  This is just a smidgen of what I learned on the World Wide Web about it.
"And a fish goes swish, swish, swish."
"A fish goes swish, swish, swish"
"A fish goes swish, swish, swish"
"A fish goes swish, swish, swish"
"With it's tail!"
"A fish goes swish, swish swish."
With the song like "A Fish Goes Swish Swish Swish" once you get the pattern you can input any animal and the sound they make.  I chose the fish as the chorus because I liked the creative balance that it doesn't make a sound.  And then in performing the song, I learned it's fun to invite children to put the palms of their hands together and wiggle them around like a fish tail moving through the water.

Gabi, one of my dearest friends who I've known over 10 years, has two children, Parker and Xander. She has been playing PBnDeb's Zoo Dance CD for Parker since it was released in 2010 and now for his little brother Xander.  Just the other day I received this on my Google+ Account:

Oh Deb, I can't tell you the fun Parker and Xander and I have listening to your Cds (STILL)  - Fish Goes Swish is a HUGE hit in our house/car!!!  Love it and you!

Her words are music to my heart.

I do have to mention, however,  at a show the other day a very clever 5 year old told me a fish goes "glub glub glub." See even I am still learning!

"A Fish Goes Swish Swish Swish" is part of PBnDeb's "Zoo Dance" CD.  You can listen to it on iTunes by searching on Pbndeb or head on over to CD Baby at: http://www.cdbaby.com/cd/pbndeb2.

And if you like it, please share it.

I am happy to say that Spenser eventually discovered his voice, and he is now a WORLD CLASS BARKER.

We are currently working on "Shush".

New York, Bagels, and Gluten Free

I was born in New York and even though I left when I was 8 years old, whenever I return, I head for those comfort food items I associate with the good times.  Like pizza, bagels and a street corner hot dog with mustard and sauerkraut.  Last week, I returned to New York City for a cousin's wedding. It was the first time I've been back in many years. The first time I've been back as a gluten free diner (allergy related).

Which means.... bummer... I can't eat pizza, bagels or a street corner hot dog.

In the world of gluten free, pizza was replaced fairly successfully, and hot dogs can be enjoyed with mustard and sauerkraut off a plate. But a bagel! Not being able to pick up a New York bagel with cream cheese made me want to cry.

When I arrived at my Uncle's apartment on the upper west side, I noticed something strange in his refrigerator. A package of gluten free  Udi's Bagels.  I learned my Uncle has recently joined the hoards of gluten free initiates and is thriving on the new diet. I have never tried Udi's gluten free bagels but I have tried other brands... and, well, yuck...

Gluten free baking is an art form. I could make this a very long post about different gluten free baking brands but this is about BAGELS...

Hungry, I opened the package.  They looked interesting.  They had a nice texture, of course, a lot denser than normal bagels.  But okay, what the heck, I stuffed one in the toaster.

It popped up a few minutes later looking nice and toasty.  Brown with a hint of crunch.  I lathered it in butter.  I put it to my lips and bit down.  It was delicious!  I have never had such a great textured gluten free pre-packaged bagel in my gluten flour-less life.

I came home to Los Angeles.  I went to my favorite grocery store, Fresco Community Market in Los Angeles which carries many gluten free options.  I purchased my own package to test it again. This time I bought Udi's Mighty Bagel.

I just finished it.  Every last crumb, and then sat down to write this post.

Catch a Bubble

Bubbles are fun! They are fun to chase and are especially fun to catch. It's difficult though the little colorful globes of gas easily pop. I have to admit popping can be as much fun, if not more, as catching.  It seems a group of children agreed with me. I performed PBnDeb's music for Southwestern Law School's Community Day. We engaged in many random acts of bubble chasing and bubble popping.

Here's my attempt.

I didn't catch a bubble, but it didn't matter. I shared my music with a wonderful group of children. We sang. We danced. We laughed. It was a good day.

Thank you Liz Reinhardt and the Southwestern Law School Public Affairs office for allowing me to use these pictures.

PBnDeb's Song of the Month for October 2013

Edgar the Spider

My name is Edgar
I am a spider
Everyone likes me
Because I'm scary!

Every night there's a special delight
The spider dance, the spider dance
In the moonlight, you can see such a fright
The spider dance

This song is on our Storybook Adventures CD.  It's a fun Halloween tune.  Most people are afraid of spiders but I happen to LOVE them. Edgar was modeled after an Orb-weaver Doug and I found in our back yard.  We used to watch him set up his web every evening from the avocado tree next door to an old clothes line post.

At night I like to spin my web
Round and round with a sticky thread
I like flies there a tasty deal
But If I catch a moth now that’s a happy meal

Philip is wonderful as the voice of Edgar.  His big deep booming voice just captures the fun of being Edgar.  In the song we teach children that spiders have more to fear from us than we do from them.

Humans fear what they can’t see
I’m not as dangerous to you as you are to me
I only have fangs
You have two big feet
I’ll stay out of your way
If we happen to meet

And then we encourage children to dance - with Edgar!

So if you want to come out tonight
Watch me spin my web in the cold moonlight
Bring your flashlight, take a chance
Don’t be scared, spin your web, do the spider dance

CD Baby's 'Capital Punishment' for PBnDeb

I love CD Baby. I really do. CDBaby.com provides a way for independent artists to distribute their music digitally, sell physical CDs, stream music and collect payments worldwide. Their customer service has always been responsive and patient with my questions. I've tried other music distribution websites with no results. Even better, I don't have record label overhead, I can make more than 50% on my music sales. I think many artists with labels and record companies behind them make a few cents on a CD sale. Maybe $1. But you'll have to ask them.

Now it's not to say that CD Baby doesn't have it's quirks.  I ran into one with the name of our band name. As you know an independent artist has to work super hard at gaining recognition. An artist agonizes over a picking a band name. Once that name is chosen you market it everywhere and you don't change it. If you hit, you are happily stuck with that name. Unless you are the artist formerly known as Prince now known as Prince again. So pick and stick.

Here's the 'agonizing' part. How did I get to PBnDeb? Well, it started with the fact that I write with the bass crazed Philip Bynoe, who is currently touring worldwide with guitar virtuoso Steve Vai.  My name is Deb Snyder. We write children's music. We need a kid-friendly name but Laurie Berkner, Banana Splits and the Wiggles were taken.

Philip's initials being PB brought back a childhood memory for me. I loved peanut butter and jelly sandwiches as a kid. I used to ask my Mom for a 'pbandj' sandwich. She would make one and cut it into delicious edible squares for me. But my name is not jelly it's Deb...bummer. Almost perfect. Anyway thanks to a little burst of imagination I put my first name in place of jelly. Watch out world of retail -- we have a band name!  It was time to start marketing.

On our first album I made a mistake by spelling our name with an ampersand PB & Deb.

And then I built our first website.  Did you know that ampersands can't be used in websites addresses. Hmm...

But pbndeb can be used which is okay for a link.  But for marketing I will use PBnDeb. Love it.  So with band name in hand, I proudly load up our content onto CD Baby.  When I go to see our artists page I notice something strange.  Our band name under each album and song is listed as Pbndeb. WHERE ARE MY CAPITALS?  Did I load them incorrectly? What a mess.

I wrote a customer help ticket immediately.  A very helpful customer service person notified me that there is a policy that band names can only have a capital letter at the beginning of each name. So you can have Laurie Berkner.  But I CAN'T have PBnDeb. Have you ever heard of the band Inxs?

Marketing your music is difficult enough. But in going through the punisment of losing my capital letters, I realized I didn't really care how you spell our band name. Just spell it.

What's in a name...nothing. What's in a song...everything. PBnDeb's music is just as exciting, entertaining and imaginative as Pbndeb's music. Well, you go be the judge.

Pretend with Zoo Dance

Go ahead, open your world wide web browser, whichever one you like (me? I'm a Chrome girl) and type in the word p-r-e-t-e-n-d. Click here to read one such article. I could probably put links all the way down this page regarding the importance of pretend for a young child.

PBnDeb's music invites pretend play. Our music easily engages a child's imagination. One of the best songs for pretend play is 'Zoo Dance.' You can find it by surfing on PBnDeb on CD Baby / iTunes / Amazon or click on one of the many links I've shamelessly made available to you in this post. It's off our second album entitled Zoo Dance.

The song 'Zoo Dance' invites children to act out animals. It's a pop tune. And the way Philip orchestrated this song is rockin! Give it a listen just to hear the musical lines he wrote. I guarantee the bass line alone will encourage anybody, kid or not, to jump out of their seat and dance. I can't put a bass line on virtual paper so enjoy the opening lyrics.

There's a brand new dance.
And it comes from the zoo.
Ya gotta pick an animal.
And do just what they do-o-o-o.

Act like a monkey.
Act like a monkey.
Swing your arms.
Eat bananas.
Ooh ooh ooh.
Be a monkey!

Philip and I wanted children to move, eat and sing (or roar) like the chosen animal. The child pretends to become the animal. It's educational.  It's creative.  It's fun!

Zoo Dance
I recently performed this song in a rockin' thirty minute set at Harvard Preschool and Kindergarten. I had elephants, monkeys, and lions stomping, peeling bananas and roaring all over the room. It was quite exciting. Both Philip and I have had friends send us funny videos of their children singing and acting like crazy animals to our tune 'Zoo Dance.'

Give it a listen. Hey, it's only a .99 download, and I've got a long way to go to sell 1 million downloads

Let me know what you think: deb@pbndeb.com

If you don't have a young child, you are still welcome to buy the song and p-r-e-t-e-n-d you do. I think pretend is good for all of us!

And thanks.

PBnDeb 999,999 Songs to Go!

The day after a big announcement is usually filled with fear and thoughts like, 'What the heck was I thinking!'  But this morning I am pretty calm about selling 1 million downloads.  It's a huge dream goal. I decided to tell Philip, my partner in music who is currently touring the world with Steve Vai, what I had gotten him, me, us into and he wrote back... from Australia, I think...

Deb's First email:

To:  Philip Bynoe
Re:  Deb's Dream

Philip,

Love seeing the pictures of you all over the world.  I have a dream and I am going to work towards it with quiet dedication but I am letting you in on it.

I want to sell 1 million .99 downloads of PBnDeb music.

To that end, I just uploaded 2 singles, Christmas is My Favorite Time of Year and Beach so I have access to market and sell those two.  I took care of you as co writer and I decided to use the Pirate Cartoon as the Album Cover for all of the singles.  I am trying something new with these songs  - CD Baby allows you to use Rumblefish for mechanical licensing which means people can sample and use the music in ads etc for a cost.  We only make 50% a tune but what the heck!

50% of something is better than 100% of nothing.

I hope I can move our songs a little more.  Too many people LOVE our music.  We owe it to the world to put it out there.

Love
Deb

Philip's Reply -- (Deb's Dream got a little longer -- thank you world wide web -- a mere apostrophe becomes ')

Deb
That's great and you will accomplish that and more.
I have to come up with a way that I can be a part of
It from the roAd.
If you have an idea let me know, I plan to
Sell our music on the us tour.
Philip

Deb's Reply (I got excited and started verbally throwing up ideas... Hey - he asked!):

YAY!

I created two awesome album covers.  Once I get them uploaded... I will make the singles go live WORLD WIDE.

Hey I sold one song... 999,999 more to go!!!  woo Hoo.

I want to make another album Mr. Bynoe.

Idea for selling... your crazy partner is trying to get 1 Million downloads.  Want to play along!?

Tell them to like our FACEBOOK Page

Love
Deb

Philip's Reply:

Subject:  Re: Deb's Dream

Uh oh
I think I saw a chicken!!

A little explanation about the 'chicken'... I am not a step by step logical thinker.  I create in whirlwind. My mind whirls and twirls with creative ideas and thoughts.  Focus is hard for me.  My husband, Doug, bought me a sweatshirt once that puts it into perspective...  My Friends all think I have A.D.D. but they just don't understand...Oh look a chicken!

Oh look a chicken has become... Oh look another song idea.  I'm okay with that.

Well anyway, now PB knows what is going on and is all for it... Now we just have to sell more downloads.  The two new songs I am talking about above 'Christmas is My Favorite Time of Year' and 'Beach' will be on CD Baby soon and then they will populate to iTunes and Amazon.

Thanks to all of you who support us and love our music!  This is fun.... only 999,999 to go.

1 Million .99 Songs

Something I learned as I was melting in the hot hot hot Pasadena sun sellling my music at the Rose Bowl Arts and Crafts Fair is I need to let you know how proud I am of the music I created with the amazing Philip Bynoe, currently touring world wide with Steve Vai. I also learned I need to encourage my friends, who are looking for delightful, creative, entertaining music for their toddlers to buy a song on iTunes / Amazon / CDBaby (just search on Pbndeb). And then tell their friends about the 1 song they purchased. We've given away hundreds of CDS and singles. We will continue to donate to those who need music and can't afford it. But Philip and I need to sell songs in order to continue the PBnDeb dream. I have a goal...drum roll please... 1 Million .99 downloads this year. If you listened to our music... and you like it, please go and buy a song... one song. And thank you from the bottom of my heart... thank you!

I 'lost' my iPhone...

It was time to upgrade my iPhone.  My two year contract was finished.  I had dropped it in the toilet about a month ago.  The rice bath helped but now it got hot quickly.  It still worked.  I wasn't rushing to get a new one... until I left my car door unlocked and 'lost' my iPhone.  It seems someone needed my iPhone and iPad more than I did.

I am over it...mostly... Well maybe one more day of ice cream and puppy dog kisses!  It happened and there's not much I can do about it except fill out online police reports, change passwords and cry.  By the way if you don't have a great password encryption program checkout KeypassX.  I LOVE IT! Correction... I LOVE Doug, my hubby.  KeypassX keeps me sane. If you have many different passwords keeping track can be challenging.  This program rocks.

I had all of my passwords changed within 2 hours not bad considering I wasn't able to get to my home computer for over an hour.  Facebook allows you to deactivate on all devices.  I like that!  I updated my status on Facebook with a message to all my friends alerting them to my recent troubles and to please watch their accounts for spam from me as I wasn't send out any emails this weekend.  Some friends have already technologically un-friended me.  It's okay.  I understand.  With my email passwords changed, it shouldn't be a problem but..better safe than... well then letting this little issue GROW into a full scale problem for anyone I know or sort of know.  If you are a friend and I won't see you on Facebook anymore...please send me an email or I will feel like I am stuck on a desert island in this lush land of electronic communication.  I guess due to someone else's breaking the law, I am now 'technologically' challenged.  A pariah in the world of communication. So I blog...

Yes,, it's a buzz kill.  And yes I feel violated.  And yes, I am a trusting...so and so... And yes, I am lazy because I had that one moment in time as I was walking away from the car when the thought, Did I lock the car? went through my mind and I didn't turn around to check.

The truth is I am so afraid of turning into a second guessing worry wart that I didn't listen to the little voice in my head that said, Go back.  I listened to the one that said, Quit worrying and enjoy the beach! which I did.  Hm...

Moving on... I had to purchase a phone.  I can't really walk around without one.  There was a time in my life when I used to have to dig in my pockets for a quarter and run to find a pay phone in order to call my agent back.  Ha!

I have been an iPhone/Apple customer from day one.  Now that my iPad was gone I didn't have my 'Kindle' which is mainly what I used it for.  At the AT&T store I was dazed looking at all of the phones.  Jalyssa, a very friendly customer service rep, laughingly assisted me into moving on from the 'loss' of my iPhone.  She was great.  I told her I text, talk and read on my phone.  And reading has become a little challenging after 50 for fonts smaller than 9 point.  Inspired, she showed me an LG Optimus G Pro.  I liked it.  I looked at Doug, tech guru hubby, and asked, "Is there any reason why I have to purchase an iPhone?"  He said, "No." The Android has caught up to the iPhone and it offers a larger screen.  So I baled on Apple.  Don't get me wrong.  I like Apple.. it's just... it's just... my eyes and my pocket book don't like Apple like they used to.  I may burn in 'h-e-double-apple-hockey-sticks.' and Steve Jobs may not let me into Apple Heaven for writing this.

So far I love the new phone.  It makes these funny little clicking sounds that are sort of soothing.  Like it's talking to me.  I have a lot to learn about Androids.  But my purse is lighter as I don't have as much hardware to carry around.  I was able to read last night in bed and send a couple of texts.  I even played Scramble With Friends...the real test.  I couldn't play Scramble on my iPhone, but I can on my LG Optimus G Pro.

More importantly, no evil is going to keep me from taking my dogs to their favorite place in the world. I am ready to journey to the Huntington Dog Beach once again.  Only next time, if a little voice in my head wonders, Did I lock the car door?  I will go back and look.

Spenser and Bodi at Huntington Dog Beach.

I love my puppy 'dawgs'...

I grew up on Dr. John.  Now I write children's music.  Sometimes the two worlds collide.  I wrote a bluesy minor key tune about how much I love my puppy 'dawgs'.  And you have to spell is 'dawgs'... or you lose the Dr. John and I don't want to lose Dr. John.

PBnDeb.com  is the children's music website you can read about the tunes I create with Philip Bynoe. This song is coming...

In the meantime here are 5 reasons why I LOOOVE my Puppy DAWGS...

Bodi is the small long haired chihuahua and something.
Spenser is the medium sized poodle terrier and something.
